Australia - Itineraries

The sixth largest country in the world and about the same size as the 48 USA mainland states of the USA and 50% larger than Europe, Australia has the lowest population density in the world. It consists of the world's smallest continent and a number of islands in the Southern, Indian and Pacific Oceans.

The outback is by far the largest part of Australia and its desert or semi-arid make it the flattest and driest inhabited continent. Only the southeast and southwest corners of the continent have a temperate climate.

Because of the continent's great age, its extremely variable weather patterns, and its long-term geographic isolation, Australia teems with native animals, many unique to the continent.

About 85% of flowering plants, 84% of mammals, more than 45% of birds, and 89% of in-shore, temperate-zone fish are endemic, plus Australia has the greatest number of reptiles of any country, with 755 species.
